NOTABLE ACCOMPLISHMENTS
MP had a very numeric 4-3-2 kind of year.
The Friars started off the year with a W against 1st time opponent Bensalem. A DeNoia to Joe Mylotte TD pass and a Terry Pitt fumble recovery was enough for a Friar victory. Ron Kinn and Andy Baker combined for 125 yards on 22 carries. Stev Ryan led the D with 3TFLs and a fumble recovery caused by Dave “Rocky” Colavita.
The Malvern Friars battled the Bonner Friars and came out on top 21-3. Jim Pitt from Denoia for 63 yards and a Pitt 57 yard run were the offensive contribution. Not to be left out, Pitt caught 4 balls for 113 yards. A Ron Kinn pick six with one minute to go sealed it for MP.
QB Denoia’s one yard run and his pass TD pass to Devine got the Friars to 14-14 at half but it wasn’t enough firepower against St. Marks of Delaware.
Fourteen was the magic number again against Episcopal. Ron Kinn from 1 yard out and Pitt 64 yard burst helped the Friars in the tie against EA. Ron Kinn’s run was set up by a Truskey fumble recovery at the 8 yard line.
Malvern exploded for 35 against Haverford School with multiple guys getting into the scoring act. Andy Baker got two, Ron Kinn, Mike Denioa and Dennis Morgan with 1 each. Total yards for the 5 TDs… 31 yards. Andy Baker led the ground attack with 87 yards. The Fords could only amass 10 yards of total offense against the Malvern D, while MP offense countered with 315 yards of their own. It was the 2nd year in a row MP shutout HS.
In a low scoring affair, the Friars outlasted GA 13-7. Leading scorer and special teams weapon Hasso got 7 points on the day, two FGs of 25 and 37 yards and one extra point ( 15th of the season). Andy Baker again led the way with 11 carries for 96 yards.
In one of those crazy Inter-Ac years a tough 8-7 loss to PC coupled with an Episcopal win over PC kept the Friars from the title. Penn Charter finished in the top 10 in SEPA. In Ted Silary’s City Top 10, Penn Charter was #1., Bonner #4 and EA #6. Against those three very good opponents the Malvern defense only yielded 25 points.
Jeff Hasso finished career with 21 extra points and 7 of 8 FGs for 72 points. Two defining moments and memories for Jeff- his field goal against Penn Charter for a 10-7 win in 1981 and 2 field goals and an extra point in a 13-7 win over GA this year.
To say that Jim Pitt was a favorite receiver might be an understatement. He caught 71% of Mike DeNoia’s passes (17 of 24) and accounted for 68% of his passing yards (336 of 490).
